We came to a disused, derelict space by the canal and transformed it into an abundant kitchen garden, met some lovely locals and together made loadsa tasty dishes from scratch and jars and jars of jam and chutney........

'We do not need more buildings in Bootle, we do not need more housing, we need something like this' – local resident Barbara Rowse

Squash were commissioned by Liverpool Biennial of Contemporary Art to run food and arts participation programme ‘Produce’ as part of the 2009 ‘Urbanism’ programme centring on art, architecture and urban renewal. Squash artists and local residents worked together to create an urban food garden, engaging in creative local food production.

As part of the Urbanism conference we lead the Urban Food Field Day - focussing on growing and food production in urban environments. Workshops and discussions were attended by Bootle residents, artists and practitioners in the fields of nutrition/food/teaching and community participation.

Future..............
Squash propose to expand on the great potential of ‘Sefton Produce’ and take bold steps to place Sefton at the heart of innovative urban food practice with and for the community. We intend to meet and enthuse a whole new generation of ‘producers’!
Taking a creative focus, this project will be concerned with growing, cooking and preserving local food whilst making beautiful temporary public spaces. We propose a 3-year inter-generational programme, beginning in 2011, working with residents living through regeneration, amongst temporarily vacant brownfield sites.

We are currently working on prototypes for mobile allotments - moveable garden feasts that will intice and excite food growers of the future!

We are developing Sefton Produce with partner organisation Liverpool Biennial, Liverpool John Moores University, London Metropolitan University and art and architecture practice 'Public Works'.
